Ian Griffiths, also known as Griff, was born in Yorkshire in 1956. As a young boy, Griff became passionate about wildlife and the natural world and spent a lot of time taking part in conservation projects and expeditions. When Griff was 13 years old he picked up his first set of acrylic paints and realized he had an untapped talent for painting. Once this was realized he went on quickly to paint his favourite subject, wildlife, and exhibited for the first time at the age of 15. Following his first exhibition he received commissions and encouraging comments from Sir Peter Scott. He has exhibited widely and received private commissions from the UK, Switzerland, Australia and the USA but now living in his wife’s homeland of Cornwall on the Lizard peninsula, he hopes to capture the beauty of the unique flora and fauna of the area as well as drawing on his experience from the many places he has lived. Griff also has travelled extensively in the UK and around the world recording his journeys through his sketch books. In 2002 Griff was asked by Professor David Bellamy to produce illustrations for several of his conservation projects and is now his artist in residence on his web site. Inspired he has continue to paint in watercolour mediums such as Acrylic, watercolour and gouache but also uses a broad range of mediums depending on the subject matter. He believes that to experiment is the key to progression. Although he does not limit himself to one particular style most of his paintings uses several layers of transparent colour gradually building up to more opaque colour which results in a more intense and vibrant painting allowing the light to shine through. The subject matter is carefully researched to provide accuracy. Composition and atmosphere are equally important as the subject itself. As well as producing paintings, prints and cards he also hopes to help businesses to raise public awareness of how their businesses are working with the environment to conserve the local flora and fauna by producing bespoke art for use in the form of information boards, nature trail signs, retail products, spotter charts, brochure illustration and much more |
