Clarence Stewart
Originals

As a young boy growing up in a rural Alabama town, Clarence Stewart knew there was only one thing he wanted to do with his life. In this Mayberry type community, young boys carried cane poles, hunted with their fathers, and shot marbles in the dirt streets. Stewart knew he wasn’t like other boys when rather than killing animals; he was busy taking their pictures and sketching drawings of tiny robins and squirrels. This is when Stewart discovered his soul’s ambition. He wanted to be an artist. Remaining true to his native roots, he stayed in Alabama throughout his childhood and even into his adulthood where art took on a whole new meaning for him. He pursued an art degree and began his career as a commercial artist for the St. Regis paper company in a neighboring community. Shortly afterwards, he decided to pursue art from a freelance standpoint. As a freelance artist, Stewart worked for several religious publishing companies. In the late eighties and the early nineties, he was one of the chief illustrators for several books published through the Baptist Sunday School Board, Scripture Press Publishing, Victor Books, Augsburg Fortress Publishing, and the United Methodist Publishing Company. He then signed with an agent out of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and began dabbling in sports art and limited edition prints. He is most noted for his sell out print of Coach Paul Bear Bryant. Through web sites like CollegeFootballArt.com and AuburnArt.com, his sports art has gained him national exposure. However, more recently, Stewart has returned to his first love, nature. He has gained much notoriety from his expressive photo-like renderings of game and migratory waterfowl. In just a short period of time, he has discovered his niche and has garnered many accolades in the realm of wildlife art. He was the 2nd place Duck Stamp winner for the state of South Carolina, he was the first place winner and his design was chosen for the 2006-2007 Alabama Waterfowl Stamp, and just this year, he was chosen for Best of Show in the annual Alabama Wildlife Federation Flora and Fauna Art Show. In the upcoming years, Stewart is looking forward to retiring from his full-time job and devoting more time to painting, traveling, and attending art shows with his wife, Bonnie.
